Unlike white or crystal opal, Australian boulder opal forms within the cracks and cavities of ironstone host rock - a sedimentary rock found predominantly in Queensland, Australia. Rather than being cut away from its host, the ironstone is left as a natural backing, which gives boulder opal two distinct advantages: exceptional durability and a dark background that makes the play-of-colour appear more vivid and intense.

The result is a stone that is both robust enough for everyday wear and visually dramatic in a way that lighter opals simply cannot match. Every boulder opal is a product of millions of years of geological activity - no two are ever alike.

The Play-of-Colour

Ask anyone who has held a boulder opal in natural light and they'll struggle to describe it adequately.
