How to Care for Australian Opal
Keep your opals beautiful for years to come.
Australian opal is one of the world’s most magical gemstones - full of colour, character, and natural individuality. With a little mindful care, your opal jewellery and loose stones will stay bright, stable, and beautiful for generations.
Everyday Wear
Australian opal is perfectly suitable for everyday wear with a little care. To keep your jewellery looking its best:
- Put jewellery on after applying lotions, perfume, or hairspray
- Remove before heavy exercise, swimming, or cleaning
- Avoid knocks, drops, or pressure on the stone
- When travelling, always pack opal jewellery in your carry-on — aircraft holds can experience extreme temperature changes that may stress the stone.
Opal is a natural gemstone, so gentle handling goes a long way.
Cleaning Your Opal Jewellery
Opals don’t need anything fancy - just simple, gentle cleaning:
- Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the stone
- Mild soap is fine if needed
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steamers, or harsh chemicals
- Don’t soak opals for long periods
If your piece has sterling silver, a silver polishing cloth is safe for the metal - just avoid rubbing the opal itself.
Storing Your Jewellery
Your opal jewellery will stay happiest when stored:
- in a soft pouch or jewellery box
- away from direct heat, hot windowsills, or radiators
- separate from harder gemstones that could scratch it
Some Georgie’s Gem Studio pieces arrive with anti‑tarnish protection, which you can reuse for storage.
Caring for Loose Opal Stones
Loose opals are a joy to collect - and they’re surprisingly low‑maintenance.
Handling
- Hold stones over a soft surface
- Avoid dropping or knocking them
- Keep fingers clean to avoid oils building up on the surface
Cleaning Loose Stones
- Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth
- Avoid chemicals, abrasives, or ultrasonic cleaners
- Never use bleach, alcohol, or jewellery dips
Storing Loose Opals
- Store in a small padded box or gem jar
- Keep away from extreme heat
- Avoid storing in airtight containers for long periods
Australian opal is naturally stable and doesn’t require special humidity - just sensible storage.
Water & Hydration
You may have heard myths about opals needing to be “kept in water”. This applies to some Ethiopian opals, not Australian opal.
Australian opal - including solid Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy stones - is non‑porous and does not absorb water. It’s perfectly fine if it gets wet, just dry it gently afterwards. No soaking, no special treatment required.
Heat, Chemicals & Extreme Conditions
To protect your opal:
- Avoid sudden temperature changes (including hot cars and direct sunlight)
- Keep away from strong cleaning products, bleach, and solvents
-
Don't leave jewellery near radiators, on windowsills, or in hot vehicles
Opal is happiest at normal room temperatures, the same conditions that are comfortable for you.
Insurance & Valuation
We recommend having your opal jewellery professionally valued and keeping photographs of each piece for insurance purposes. Opals are unique by nature - no two are alike - so a current valuation ensures you're properly covered if the unexpected happens. If you need guidance on finding a valuer, feel free to get in touch.
